About the Proviso East High School (PEHS) Wellness Committee

Mission Statement: To create a school community that supports health.
What is PEHS Wellness Committee?
PEHS Wellness committee is a dedicated group to promoting wellness in the school environment at Proviso East High School through nutrition and physical activity.
Why was PEHS Wellness Committee established?
In 2004, The Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act was established, and required that all school districts in the United States create a school wellness policy. The PEHS Wellness Committee was established to develop and implement goals related to the wellness policy.
A school wellness policy was developed as a result.
What is the main focus of this committee?
The main focus is improving the nutrition and physical activity environment of the school.
Who makes up this committee?
PEHS students, PEHS faculty, Loyola School Based Health Center faculty, Loyola students and interns, and anyone who would like to join to help and are dedicated to improve the nutrition and physical environment of the school. Our vision to have more students and even parents involved with the Wellness Committee as well.

Goals and Objectives:
Year One (2014):
- Establish membership and meeting schedule
- Complete school wellness assessment (Alliance for Healthier Generation)
- Strategic Plan based on school wellness assessment
- Improve access to high quality food, focus on fruits and vegetables
- Grab n' Go Salads in cafeteria
- PEHS community garden
- Increase student participation in National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs: Benefit Provision, monthly taste tests, student artwork displayed in cafeteria
- Engage PEHS community in committee activities:
- Collaborate with Proviso Partners for Health
- Establish Peer Youth Advocates
- Promote Staff at Role Models
- Needs assessment of staff
- Revise School Wellness Assessment and Strategic Plan
- Secure Funding for Future Projects
- Increase evaluation activities
